Senior Tories Expresses Concern Over Huawei 5G Network In UK

Several senior Conservatives in the United Kingdom have expressed their concerns regarding the government’s decision to allow Huawei to participate in building the 5G network in the country.

The senior Conservatives have written a letter to the MPs requesting to rule out the involvement of Huawei or any other high-risk vendors in building the 5G network in the country.

The Tories who have signed the letter include former ministers Sir Iain Duncan Smith, Owen Paterson, David Davis, Bob Seely, Tobias Ellwood and, Damian Green, wherein they have stressed to find better solutions on providers for the next-generation cellular network in the UK.

The senior Conservatives have mentioned that the country should identify the trusted vendors to allow them to become a primary contractor in building such a critical infrastructure for the country.

They have also added that by trusted vendors, they mean companies from countries that encourage fair market competition, respect human rights, is ruled by law, and understand data privacy and non-coercive government agencies.

    The Earlier News

Earlier in the month, the UK government has confirmed restrictions on Huawei’s role in installing the 5G network in the UK. The limits include a ban on Huawei from supplying kits to sensitive parts of the network, allowing it to account up 35 percent cap in the network periphery, and removing or excluding the company’s use of equipment near areas like military bases and nuclear sites.

Quite many foreign offices, as well as Conservative MPs, have emphasized the tensions between the two countries regarding Huawei. In light of these situations, it will not be a great move to allow Huawei to take part in such a severe advancement to the country. The country in no means is ready to compromise on the privacy and security of the UK when it comes to Huawei.

On the flip side, Huawei has always confirmed that it would never aid the Chinese government attack any of its client countries using the inside or business information. The founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, has also said that he would rather shut the company down than help any spying activities in favor of any government. Some rumors are allowing Huawei to enter in the UK for the 5G rollout will finally result in jeopardizing the post-Brexit deal between Britain and the US.

    Final Words

Finally, Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of Britain, has responded to the letters by confirming that he, too, wishes to lessen the involvement of Huawei in rolling out the 5G network in the UK. He has kept the details closed for now but is on the lookout for solutions and ideas to proceed from other parliamentarians.

China Threatens Germany With Retaliation If Huawei 5G Is Banned

With the German Chancellor Angela Merkel pushing to apply cybersecurity guidelines on the Chinese smartphone maker Huawei and other 5G vendors, the Chinese government has threatened to retaliate against the same.

    Huawei 5G Is Banned

Lawmakers in the Angela Merkel government have recently expressed concern over Huawei’s deployment of 5G wireless networks in European countries. This comes in light of the security allegations made against the Chinese smartphone maker and its 5G network hardware and capabilities.

The Chinese ambassador to Germany, Wu Ken, recently stated-

“If Germany were to make a decision that leads to Huawei’s exclusion from the German market, there will be consequences. The Chinese government will not stand idly by.”

He stated that Huawei was under no obligation whatsoever to provide information to the Chinese government.

The ambassador also went to draw from the German carmakers who supply over a quarter of the 28 million cars sold in the Chinese auto market last year. Wu Ken went on to further rationalize-

“Could we one day say that these German cars are no longer safe because we are in a position to manufacture our own cars? No. That is pure protectionism.”

Last month, around 80 officials part of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party had, at the party’s annual convention, presented a motion that stood against the Chinese smartphone manufacturer’s big role in setting up 5G networks in Germany. The convention released a text that read, “Only those are trustworthy that are not under the influence of undemocratic states without a functioning rule of law.”

Previous reports stated that German Chancellor Angela Merkel was earlier consenting of Huawei supplying components to set up the 5G infrastructure in Germany. after the statement from the CDU at the convention, Merkel had signaled that this motion wouldn’t be considered as binding.

Having recently finalized rules and regulations for the deployment of 5G components in Germany, the German government had not excluded the Chinese manufacturer from its engagement in supplying components. Further, the government officials did confirm that the country’s security catalog will be the base for technical and additional evaluation of this arrangement. They also stated that no single vendor would be singled out and barred.

In line with the same, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier warned against laws that are passed singling out a particular firm or establishment.

“We shouldn’t turn against individual companies and instead insist that all electronic and high technology components used in Germany meet the highest security requirements”

He elucidated in an interview published in Der Tagesspiegel newspaper.

Stating that it’s components and software contained “back doors” that could enable the Chinese government to spy on countries. The US has been, in the recent past, trying to influence its ally countries to ban Huawei from supplying 5G components. In a bid to fight sanctions imposed on it, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer filed a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission this month.
