Spotty internet connections are the worst. They affect our browsing, playing games, and watching videos. Those who commute a long distance for work or study know the frustration a spotty internet connection can cause. This is where YouTube has come out with an awesome feature. The YouTube offline viewing feature is for those who want to view videos smoothly while not having a good internet connection. To use this, one could easily download the videos they want via Wi-Fi and later, view them offline. It can be used on both Android and iOS devices. While this feature has been around for quite some time, many users don’t know much about this.
How to download YouTube videos for offline viewing
To download a YouTube video for offline viewing, first, open the YouTube app on your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet. Go to the video that you want to download. Once you have the video, you will see an option ‘Add to Offline’ icon located below the video. You can also get to this option by clicking on the menu button and selecting the ‘Add to Offline’ options. If the particular video does not support this feature, you will see a crossed Add to Offline button. This means you will not be able to download the video for offline viewing.
Once you click on the option, you will be asked to select the resolution – Low, Medium, or HD. While the low resolution will take up the least space, it will also have the worst quality. Similarly, HD videos will take up more space, but the quality will be very high. Once you choose this, the video will start downloading and will be saved on your device.
How to watch YouTube offline video
Downloaded and saved YouTube videos will only be available within the YouTube app. To find the video file that you have downloaded, go to the home page of the YouTube app. You can achieve this by dragging the video down using gestures or pressing the back button. On the home page, tap on the ‘Accounts’ tab located on the right corner of the screen. You will see an option called ‘Saved Videos’ Tapping on this will take you to a page where all your downloaded videos are saved. Simply select the one you want to view and get started! To delete a particular video, click on the menu button and choose the ‘Remove from Saved Videos’ option. For a more detailed guide on deleting saved YouTube videos, check our article out.
So, how long can you play a video offline?
You can download the video you want and play it offline for up to 48 hours. Post this period, you will need to connect to the internet to sync the video to load any changes.
One drawback of this feature is that there is no ad-free viewing option. Users should also note that not every video is available for viewing offline. While most of the videos do offer download and offline viewing, you might occasionally come across videos that don’t support this feature.
