Tiktok Scandal: Elite Toorak Girls’ School in Melbourne Rocked

A well-known private girls’ school in Melbourne recently became the centre of attention after three minor students posted a video of themselves. The incident is a major TikTok scandal. The video follows three girls driving through McDonald’s. The students posted this on their social media accounts. Since they were wearing their school uniforms at the time, it became easy to identify them.

Three underage girls from St Catherine’s School in Toorak filmed themselves driving a car. They uploaded this video on TikTok. The video captures them giving instruction to the driver, who is also one of the teens. The student does not have her license yet either. The video features a lot of laughter, shouts, and chants.

According to the school, they believed that the girls were under the supervision of a family guardian” at the time. Robert Marshall, the Deputy Principal of the school, claims that the guardian who is not visible in the video was the one supervising. The same statement was given to 9News as well.

Marshall says, “The school is aware of an isolated incident that occurred outside of school hours involving three students. This incident occurred whilst they were under the supervision of a family guardian. As this remains a private matter for the families involved, the school will not comment any further at this time.”

St Catherine’s School in Melbourne is a prestigious school, with annual fees in the range of $35,000. The video that became big news captures the teens going through McDonald’s drive-through. The unlicensed, teen driver is wearing her school unfirm which is quite clearly visible even over the emojis in the TikTok video. While the teen driver seems to be having fun driving, the passengers mimic fear by putting a hand to their faces. Another disturbing fact here is that none of the passengers seemed to be wearing a seat belt.

I am not even pressing the pedal because I don’t need to.” The passengers, however, chant, “Brake, brake, brake.” Once they reach McDonald’s drive-through window, they break into a chant that has spread like wildfire across social media.

“Can I get a Big Mac, super-serve of fries, why are you staring at me, please go get my apple pies,” the teens sing in unison. They proceed to order 20 chicken nuggets, three large chips, one McFlurry, four Big Macs, five apple pies, and one chocolate milkshake.

TikTok is owned by ByteDance. This is not the first time, TikTok has come under light for allowing underage users on its platform. Last year, the US authorities fined the app A$8.5 million for collecting data on users under 13 years of age. Australia’s e-Safety Commissioner launched a new online safety booklet in light of this and other incidents online. Julie Inman Grant mentions that TikTok needs to have more safety features in place for underage users on the platform. After it went viral, the video has been deleted from the platform.

The platform removed some of the a after makers of Hellboy & Angel Has Fallen pursued the issue legally. In the subpoena, other names were mentioned as well including Popcorn Time, Coto Movies, and MediaBox HD. However, Coto Movies had a bad time with the issue. Soon after, the developers announced that they are closing down after the copyright infringement issue. They released a notification for their users and about their intention to quit.

I now plan to fully respect intellectual property laws and strongly urge those who used my app to use legal apps to watch movies.”

Tiktok App Livestreamed- A User’s Suicide

This incident happened on 21st February 2019, when João, a 19-year-old young vlogger from Brazil, live-streamed his suicide through the Tik-Tok application. The event took place at about 3:23 pm, and the video remained live for about one and a half hours with the visual of the dead body.

TikTok app was the fourth most downloaded application in the world in 2019. The TikTok office became aware of the incident at 5:00 pm. The company waited for about three hours before relaying the matter to the police. From about 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the company worked rapidly to make sure that the incident does not catch any media attention to defame the image of the company.

Instead of immediately informing the authorities and the family of the teenage boy, TikTok Brazil office made sure that the news does become a potential “viral” subject. The officials also instructed to ensure that the story does not get exposure on other platforms, even by chance.

The company did not take any responsibility, and the Official chose to remain anonymous.

Suicide Cases History Through Social Media Apps

Such an incident was not the first one on this app or any other social media app in the generic sense. Previously, two reports of suicide recordings through the TikTok app took place in India also. Due to this, the court had attempted to ban this app in the Indian subcontinent but it did not happen.

Other apps have proper screening policies relating to such incidents that seem to be missing from TikTok.

Risks Involved

Suicide is a grave issue and one of the major causes of death among young people. The human tendency of copying can add to the severity of this issue. The copycat syndrome can spread impacts of suicide in the community hence, leading to an upsurge in such incidents.

Even the World Health Organization has warned against this copycat syndrome and advised the officials of such applications to make strict and effective guidelines towards these.

Huawei Conundrum: Germany Set To Follow UK

Germany is working on a deal that would give Huawei restricted freedoms. In a way, this is pretty similar to the UK deal. A report in Reuters suggests that the leading political parties in Germany are working on a strategy paper that would allow Huawei only a limited role to take part in the implementation of 5G networks. Similar to the UK, this is quite a sensible approach to take for the Huawei Conundrum while deploying the next generation of connectivity. The agreement states, “State actors with sufficient resources can infiltrate the network of any equipment maker. Even with comprehensive technical checks, security risks cannot be eliminated completely – they can at best be minimized. At the same time, we are not defenceless against attempts to eavesdrop on 5G networks. The use of strong cryptography and end-to-end encryption can secure confidentiality in communication and the exchange of data.”

Huawei Conundrum

The stance of the government has not been confirmed yet. The new position is likely to be voted on February 11, 2020. There are still some in the country, such as the Social Democratic Party, a junior coalition partner to the Christian Democratic party, who are pushing for an all-out ban. However, it looks like Huawei will make it, even if only with restricted function. The paper talks about approaches to take in order to manage Huawei which is quite similar to the one the UK has taken. With regards to the statement released by the German authorities, it looks like they are taking the stance that it would be impossible to guarantee 100% safety, regardless of the equipment manufacturer. It is just not rational to target one specific company.

The paper also mentions that the network would be split into three different components. This includes radio, transmission, and core. The authorities have also got different procedures in place for managing Huawei equipment based on its designation. Again, this risk-management approach is similar to the one in the UK.
