After using the so-called “wearable smartphone” by Nubia for a few weeks, I must say that it is definitely not a smartphone. At least, not the way we use our phones. It doesn’t even have a web browser. Leave Google Maps, Instagram, Uber or other apps alone.

Though you can easily criticize Nubia Alpha as a useless, crazy gadget, there are still some of the features and design elements you would like. Nubia actually misses a lot on its execution. But it comes with a new form factor and has set a new trend for wearables, I can say. It could definitely redefine what we look at our smart watches and smartphones, though a lot of fixes to be done here.

When tweaks have been made to the camera or ergonomics of its display and software improvements are made, Nubia Alpha would definitely be worthy of its hefty price tag of $449. You will mostly get a watch which definitely has features that can make it a head-turner.

Bendy 4-inch display

The 4-inch OLED bendable display is one of the most worthwhile features in Nubia Alpha. It is mounted well on the steel band which fits securely and well on the wrist. You might be lining up 3 screens from one end to another in a row. There is lots of screen real estate and it really comes handy to read a huge string of texts. It really wraps across your wrist. It’s weird that Nubia is still not able to find out how you can check out emails on that bendable display.

You can’t see the whole display of the device without having to wrist your wrist in Olympic style. You could get the most of it if Nubia managed to move the display so you can see more of it in your wrist. I haven’t faced any durability problem with flexible display of Nubia Alpha. Remember the time when Samsung revealed the review samples of Galaxy Fold? It faced a lot of complaints regarding folding display.

iPhone 4 camera features, but lacks in quality

You will see a 5MP camera atop the wrist. But taking selfies is really a terrible affair. I could often twist and stretch my arm to cover the whole head in its frame. But this little bit of effort rarely gave a nice shot. As per modern standards, image quality is quite bad. The photo quality is pretty much like iPhone 3GS. Nubia Alpha is far behind when it comes to getting great views.

It can record video, but only for 10 seconds. I don’t know why you are going to use a phone when you cannot get good image quality and can’t even record longer videos. If Nubia could move the camera within the wrist, it would really deliver decent videos and selfies. Moving both the camera and display calls for both right-handed and left-handed variant but it could be a lot more useful.

It would be even better if we could use at least one button to push the shutter. It’s odd to click a picture with in-display camera shutter as my fingers often block the camera.

Not a bracelet in any way

There is one myth should be busted here. Nubia Alpha is definitely not a slap bracelet. A metal link with dual clasp is one of the best things of this device. You can add/remove links easily to resize the watch over your wrist. It goes without saying that the Nubia Alpha is hefty and chunky. Unlike the silicone band, it felt secure and solid.

The battery which lived up to 48 hours on one charge is the best feature of Nubia Alpha. It also has IP65 rating for water and dust resistance. Actually, it lived up to dust, water splashes and some cold coffee splashed on it.

Clunky and confusing software

It is nice to say that Nubia tacked the software on this device. I really liked its Red Magic Mars smartphone which runs much like stock Android 9 Pie. In Alpha, it seems that company started from scratch. Its software is quite confusing and clunky to navigate.

Just playing a song is insanely difficult. From weather to fitness, it has lots of tiny apps. You need to type phrases or words to scroll through the display. It is very easy to navigate the apps, i.e. just like you would do with finger swipes and scrolls. It can detect gestures with Alpha Gestures. Even though it was cool, I don’t know how often I am going to use it.

The software was quite buggy with some inconsistencies. A new email notification shows up two times, once as Android push message and once from Gmail. The dialog boxes also have “OK” “Cancel” missing. It has lots of fitness features. For example, you can track your steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts.

Xiaomi Posts Record Q3 Revenues, but Smartphone Sales Drop

hinese smartphone giant Xiaomi has published its quarterly revenue growth but it is slowest ever in its history. The smartphone market of the country deals with its secured calm period in sales and its archrival Huawei has grabbed more market share. The Smart Home and IoT divisions of the company were the major driving forces behind the growth and the smartphone division fell a bit.

For the third quarter in 2019, the revenues were higher than before at $7.63 billion by Xiaomi but the reason it recorded the same is even interesting. At $4.59 billion, smartphone sales make the record but it is still 7.8% down when comparing year on year. In the third quarter, Xiaomi shipped 32.1 million handsets due to which, it ranked 4^th in the global market (with 9.2% market share, according to Canalys).

IoT and other consumer electronics items sales were accounted for over $2.22 billion of the total revenue of the company, which is significantly 44.4% hike as compared to last year’s same quarter. The laptops and smart TVs have also recorded $824 million (which is 36.5% year on year hike).

The Global Expansion

The global expansion of Xiaomi is fruitful with around 17.2% of overseas revenues for the third quarter and it makes up around half of the total turnover for quarterly sales. For the first 9 months of 2019, the net profit of the company has marked a 37.1% hike of $1.3 billion over the same quarter last year. This profit of $1.3 billion is more than the company made during the whole of last year.

In the first quarter till September 30, revenue grew up to 5.5% to CNY 53.66 billion over the same period earlier this year, especially with the expectation of analysts by CNY 53.74 billion. The net income earlier this year was CNY 2.50 billion, which rose to CNY 3.47 billion.

Consumers are to holding on to their device for a longer period and smartphone demands have been lowered in China so far. In addition, Chinese shoppers have also rushed behind and helped Huawei to boost sales. The second-largest smartphone maker in the world, Huawei was recently blacklisted by the US.

According to Canalys, a market research firm, the shipments of Xiaomi to the Chinese market also fell by 1/3^rd in the quarter ended September, while the shipment of Huawei smartphones rose 66%. In the Chinese market, the shipment of smartphones shrank 3%.

Huawei Nova 6 Listed on VMall

The most awaited Huawei Nova 6 was scheduled to come on December 5 and has been listed on an online retailer operated by Huawei, Vmall.com. It will be available in two variants – 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB and in four colors.

The device will arrive in both 4G and 5G variants. But 4G variant will be available only in 128GB option and in Blue, Black, and Blue-Purple shades, according to the listing.

On the other side, the 5G variant will be available in both 128GB and 256GB storage models and it will also come in Red color option.

There is no proper spec sheet revealed on the listing of Huawei Nova 6 but the renders also reveal that the device will come with 3.5mm jack above and power button (with fingerprint scanner) and volume rocker on the right side.

In addition, the new images also reveal some texts on the back panel which read “AI Camera/OIS” next to the cameras. It hints the rear quad camera setup will include an AI-powered camera and a telephoto zoom lens with OIS stabilization.

We are still waiting for the official full specs sheet of Nova 6. But, it is confirmed that the device will arrive with a 32MP selfie camera along with an 8MP ultrawide angle lens. Nova 6 has passed Geekbunch a few days ago and revealed major specs like Kirin 990 SoC, Android 10 and 8GB RAM.

Along with the 4G variant, the Huawei Nova 6 5G is also scheduled to launch on December 5 in China and the phone has been listed on the online retailer by Huawei ahead of its launch, VMall.com. The phone is listed in 2 memory variants and four colors – 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB. The device is all set to come with an IPS LCD 6.57-inch display just like Honor V30.

The Nova 6 5G variant may also sport a dual punch-hole display at the front with a selfie camera setup on the top left corner. Including the chin and the top, bezels seem thin on all edges.

The Huawei Nova 6 5G is may also come with the quad rear camera module and 60MP snapper. The device will get a Sony IMX686 sensor, with a pair of 2MP cameras on the back and 16MP snapper.

LG G8 ThinQ Receiving Stable Android 10 Update

The render shows the Redmi K30 device with a dual punch-hole display in the top right corner. By keeping authenticity aside, the earlier “live photos” are pretty much in line.

There is also a render of seriously lower resolution teasing the back panel of the phone and it seems to be like a vertical camera panel positioned in a sort of oval design. It is not easy to come out with detail due to the very low resolution.

However, one more important part of detail that we can explain is that it might not have any fingerprint scanner on the back. If it is the case, it might have an in-display fingerprint scanner. And if it is happening, the panel might have an OLED display.

It goes without saying that those last speculations are coming on our side. According to some of the leaks, the device will have a full HD 6.66-inch LCD display with an aspect ratio of 20:9.

Some other rumors of specs include refresh rate of 120Hz on the panel along with Snapdragon 730G processor, coupled with 64GB storage and 6GB RAM on the base variant.

The camera panel is supposed to have 64MP main snapper, 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 8MP telephoto zoom lens, and 2MP depth sensor on the rear side. It will have a 20MP selfie snapper.

Other details

Without having a specific order, some of the other details include 27W fast charging with 4500mAh battery, IR blaster, NFC, and 3.5mm headphone jack. When it comes to pricing, Redmi K30 might fall around CNY 2000 ($285) according to some sources.

Some others also reveal CNY 2300 ($330). Both could easily be found correct in case K30 has few new variants and it takes after its precursor. One of the leaked posters also mentioned 5G support.

Overall Redmi K30 is going to be a killer upper mid-range smartphone with plenty of flagship-level features. It consists of a completely bezel-less display with high resolution.

It has good battery capacity coupled with fast charging for smooth performance. But there is a lack of expandability and storage department might be a letdown.

Vivo iQOO Neo with Snapdragon 855+ passes through TENAA

Vivo’s iQOO range is supposed to come with a major upgrade in its chipset lineup yet again. Currently, it is going to hold the flagship processor, Snapdragon 855+.

iQOO seems to be developing a specific pattern, mostly in its Vivo Neo range. Initially, Vivo launched iQOO Neo with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and it later launched a flagship model that comes with SD 855 SoC.

The latest version arrived with a lot of smaller upgrades and more powerful SoC, which optimizes faster charging and comes with a bigger selfie camera.

Along with those, the devices are quite much similar to both the hardware and design departments. It seems like the device will come with yet another improved version once again. It will come with the highest SD 855+ SoC.

About the model

Currently, the device has got the model number V1936AL, which is quite similar to V1936A model number with iQOO Neo 855. It is believed that the device would be titled iQOO Neo 855+. It was listed with 159.53×75.23×8.13mm dimension and weighing 198.5g on TENAA listing.

The overall specifications of the device are pretty similar to other models. They have 128GB storage, 8/12 Gigs of RAM, FHD+ Super AMOLED 6.38-inch screen as well as in-display fingerprint sensor. They won’t have 6GB/64GB models like last ones.
