In real life, after charging at 8:00 AM, enjoying music and videos on 45-minute of a bus ride, answering emails and messages all day, and taking calls for an hour, and doing some things when coming back, the device had around 65% of juice left at 8:00 PM.

Even though it doesn’t come with a fast charger out of the box, it’s also worth keeping in mind that it does support fast charging by Qualcomm.

Camera

No matter how powerful and well-built the inner components of the device are, almost every device relies on their cameras. So, it goes without saying that Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro has some nice and capable lenses.

It features a 20MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 2MP depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture. There is a 12MP main lens on the back with f/1.9 aperture and 5MP depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a range of AI improvements.

With the vertical swipes, you can access several modes and it opens quick toggle features on the left. AI is turned on and HDR is set to “Auto” by default. The picture quality is pretty good or the price and details are good enough.

Interface

One of the major problems with buying Chinese smartphones is that they have a bulk of software skins for a lot of additions and features. For example, the device doesn’t show notifications when locked.

After installing the apps, the home screen is filled before filling into infinity or right with no order. You can fix it by installing a launcher or going to Settings. Basically, it runs on Android 8.1 based on MIUI.

After a long time, ASUS has finally come up with a smartphone in the market. Once a mid-segment leader, ASUS had lost its plot when facing tough competition against various Chinese makers in terms of offering affordable smartphones. But ASUS has made its entry with ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1), a budget smartphone that is here to compete with already successful Honor lineup and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Launched later this year, the Zenfone Max Pro is one of the first devices in the world which came with features like dual cameras and taller display as a well-rounded mid-range smartphone.

Design

On the design front, the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro doesn’t look quite premium. When most of the brands are offering functional design and a premium look in this price segment, it could be a turn-off for most users.

But when it comes to the success of the Redmi series, it seems that customers don’t care about the looks that much if a device is powerful enough.

ASUS Zenfone Max Pro is packed in a tough aluminum body and has a bigger display with thin bezels. Its 83% of the screen-to-body ratio is pretty decent with curved corners and edges and the phone looks comfortable to use and hold single-handedly despite having large size display.

Display

The Zenfone Max Pro comes up with full HD+ 5.99 inches IPS display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The display is pretty good in its price segment and colors are accurate enough with 1500:1 contrast ratio.

Even brightness is high enough for nice sunlight readability. Despite lacking Gorilla Glass protection, the display has oleophobic protection to make it scratch-resistant.

Performance

Performance-wise, the Zenfont Max Pro is powered by the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset and is available in two variants – 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB ROM. The successor of the older and most popular Snapdragon 625, Snapdragon 636 is known to be a 50% faster processor and also delivers greater efficiency.

In comparison to ARM Cortex A53 cores on the previous Snapdragon 625, it comes with 8 Qualcomm Kryo cores. Hence, Zenfone Max Pro seems to be a better performer without doing any benchmark tests among both.

It can handle almost everything you throw at it, whether HD movies or heavy-graphic games like PUBG. When it comes to normal usage, the Android experience was quite good without any stuttering or lags.

The peerless audio experience is another major highlight with the 5-magnet speaker as well as the NXP amplifier onboard. All in all, the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro is an all-rounder device that clears all the benchmarks when it comes to form factors and functionality as an affordable device. The smartphone is very capable but we had to go deeper and use it for an extended period to test before sharing its final verdict. On paper, the specs are very promising, especially in its attractive pricing.

The device comes in two color options – Deepsea Blak and Meteor Silver. The base variant of Zenfone Max Pro costs around $166 and the higher variant is $196. The best thing is that the device is bundled with a free Max Box accessory. According to the company, they will follow with a new variant having 16MP + 5MP rear camera setup and 6GB+64GB memory for $225.

One reason to really like Moto X Pure Edition (Style as global version) is that it is an unlocked phone from Motorola at best price and it can work on all leading wireless carriers across the US like T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Along with it, this 5.7” successor to Moto X (2014) also promises to offer the same customization features. For example, you can choose from different materials at the backing and various trim colors. In the sea of similar devices, Moto X Pure has a great edge over the competitors.

One letdown is that it feels too bulky for smaller hands. Battery life is great, the camera is not that impressive and the services don’t have anything new, let alone some minor changes.

Prices and Availability

When it comes to pricing, Moto X Pure Edition comes unlocked for $400 in the US ($100 less than the launch price in last year). However, the price is subject to rising as per some design options and storage capacity. In the UK, the pricing starts at £399 for the 32GB variant and £434 for the 64GB variant.

As Moto X Style, it is available only on contract and exclusive to Vodafone in Australia. It is offered on both AU$100 and AU$80 plans, along with monthly repayment of AU$3. For 24 months, it sums up to AU$2472 and AU$1992.

Design

The display of Moto X Pure has been raised by around half an inch as compared to Moto X. It is not as large as Google Nexus 6, the size bump makes it significantly bigger than Moto X which had 5.2 inches display. For some people, it may not fit in front pockets and you cannot hold it single-handedly. But it is still appealing and sturdy handset.

The curved backing fits into your palm and glass panel curves down the side edges smoothly. Ridges are touch-sensitive on the sleep/power button and there are narrow control buttons. The viewing angle is wide enough and is responsive to touch. You won’t have any problem playing games, reading the text, streaming videos, and watching HD movies. You can choose between vibrant and normal color modes under Display.

Software

Unlike its name, Moto X Pure doesn’t run the “Pure” Android interface. At least, it’s not like Google Nexus series and Play Edition. But the Moto line comes very close with pure Android experience. First of all, it is unlocked and you will not get any bloatware and branding from the carrier.

Instead, it will come with a basic set of apps by Google like Gmail, YouTube, Chrome browser, Play Store, etc. Next up, you won’t have any overlap of manufacturer’s UI over the phone like Samsung and HTC devices which have TouchWiz and Sense skins respectively. Motorola still offers some great features in the Moto app.

Some features are available from Moto apps like Actions, Moto Assist, Display, and Voice. With Assist, you can adjust device settings according to your activity and location. If you are planning a meeting with Google Calendar, it can turn to vibrate and reply to a missed call with a specific message.

Moto X Pure Edition has come with lower clock speed as compared to its older sibling but SD 808 still operates smoothly. Despite having 3GB RAM, we haven’t face any lag while doing daily tasks like opening the camera, switching through images, apps, calling, and playing graphic-intensive games. It took around 1.38 seconds to open the native camera app and 37 seconds to turn off.

Unlike the last two Moto X versions, Moto X Pure Edition comes with a dedicated MicroSD card slot which supports up to 128GB of memory.

Battery

Although Moto X Pure comes with a 3000mAh battery, it can discharge faster due to heavy usage. After surfing the web all day, making calls, and downloading apps, it has gone down to 30% by noon. We had to charge it again to last till evening.

The device lasted around 8 hours and 45 minutes on average with consistent video playback on the battery drain test. On the other side, Moto X had a 2300mAh battery but it lasted 10 hours.

However, this handset comes with Turbo Power 25W fast charger, which juices up the battery faster. It takes around an hour and 15 minutes to charge up from 0 to 100 percent. If you can’t wait, turn it off and plug in and it will gain 20% of power within 10 minutes.

Samsung has released more than 13 models this year and counting, which accounts for over half of the new device announcements by the company this year and it is not easy to choose the best one for you.

To complicate things even further, they have launched two of the most identical smartphones – Samsung Galaxy M40 and Galaxy A60. Both of them are almost similar, the only difference in RAM and storage options (A60 is available only in 6GB/128GB variant). Since we have cleared up the differences between both, we are going to focus on Galaxy A60 because both of them are the same on paper.

Out of the Box

Like other A-series devices, Samsung Galaxy A60 comes in a glossy white box. Inside, we have got the device, a Samsung charger (rated 5V/2A and 9V/1.67A) and a USB-C cable. In addition, there is a clear silicone case for added security.

Design

Design-wise, Samsung Galaxy A60 doesn’t look quite premium. With a plastic build, it looks like just another mid-range device. On the other side, various Chinese companies are using premium materials like glass build for the same price. The magic happens in its front. Unlike other devices from the Korean giant, it features Infinity-O punch-hole display. Hence, the phone has very thin bezels.

Display

Instead of having the crisp Super AMOLED display, the A60 adopts the IPS LCD display which might lose those deep and clean blacks. But the resolution is quite high with 1080x2340p and taller 19:5:9 Aspect Ratio. It seems that Samsung had tried to make up for the absence of Super AMOLED feel.

Battery Life

The Galaxy A60 features the decent 3500mAh battery which seems to last pretty much as compared to the competition. But it is not a record-breaker in charging. With 15W charger having Quick Charge 2.0, it has charged only 40% within 30 minutes from 0 percent.

Interface

The A60 is packed with Samsung’s official One UI powered by Android 9 Pie. The interactive details and elements are within your thumb’s reach by just swiping down. But on the other hand, the face unlock is not quite fast. It takes up to 3 seconds to detect the face. In fact, the power button is found to be significantly faster.

Performance

Performance-wise, Samsung Galaxy A60 is not quite extraordinary as compared to other devices with Snapdragon 675 SoC. The processor is also based on Samsung’s 11nm LPP node. It is a blend of 14nm and 10nm processes for better power efficiency as compared to 14nm Exynos chipsets.

It is backed with Octacore chip with 6×1.7GHz Kryo 480 silver cores and 2x2GHz Kryo 460 Gold cores and is powered by Adreno 612 GPU. It is paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The chip is doing really well in multi-core and single-core benchmark tests and stands really well as compared to mid-rangers. But the SD 675 doesn’t stand quite well in GPU performance, even though you cannot feel the difference in daily usage. The CPU has 15% fewer graphics power as compared to Mali GPU of Exynos 9610.

Overall, the chip is good for general use and multi-tasking for several years. In single-threaded and multi-threaded work, it gives great performance. Other chipsets are tuned well for gaming. So, you won’t face any lags or issues with this device.

Camera

Like Galaxy A70, the A60 comes with triple rear cameras including 32MP main camera with f/1.7 aperture. Along with it, the device also has one of the large sensors by Samsung, PDAF which works on pixel-binning technology. It combines 4 similar pixels into one to capture more detail and light, and offer better low-light shots and improve dynamic range.

It outputs the pictures in 12MP rather than 8MP. Anyways, it has a secondary 8MP snapper with ultra-wide f/2.2 aperture and field of view of 123 degrees. The 5MP unit is used for depth sensing only.

When you open the native camera app, you will find some basic icons and interface. You can easily get through the features, menus, and modes if you have used Samsung devices before. These days, the default camera apps are quite similar on all devices. The only difference is in the arrangement of extra settings, camera modes, and icon styling.

Overall

With tough competition with Mi A3, Redmi K20/Mi 9T and Realme X, it seems not easy to recommend Galaxy A60 by looking at the features and specs. All in all, the A60 has nothing exceptional that can make it stand out, except good computing performance and decent endurance in battery life. Instead, we ended up with more to expect from the display and camera performance.

Another turn off is its removal of 3.5mm headphone jack which makes things even harder for this device to last in the competition. The price might drop in the future eventually to make it a nice choice in the lower-midrange segment.
